Capidava, Roman archaeological site in Dobruja region, Romania.
Capidava is a Roman fortress situated on a hilltop overlooking the Danube River, protected by substantial defensive walls. The structure included watchtowers positioned to control the river and monitor the surrounding terrain.
Emperor Trajan established a garrison here as part of his preparations for military campaigns against the Dacians. The location served as a crucial border outpost along the Danube for centuries afterward.
The site displays layers of Geto-Dacian and Roman presence, visible through pottery, coins, and carved stones discovered during excavations. These objects show how different peoples coexisted and influenced each other at this location.
The site is accessible via the E61 road near Hârşova or through connecting routes from Cernavodă. It is best visited in clear weather to fully appreciate the elevated position overlooking the river and surrounding area.
The fortress remained a strategic military position for over a thousand years along the border. Only in the 11th century did an external attack bring about its final abandonment.
