Cetatea Biharia is a medieval fortress with earthen walls forming a rectangular layout and surrounded by water-filled trenches. The walls once rose several meters high and worked together with an outer circular structure to create a connected defensive system.
The fortress was built over a thousand years ago as the seat of a powerful military commander and later experienced a siege lasting weeks. It then served bishops as a residence before they moved their seat to the nearby city.
The name comes from the Bihoria region, and the site's layout reflects its past as a spiritual center for church leaders. Visitors can still trace the ground plans today that show how bishops and their communities lived and worshipped here.
The site lies north of a larger city and is best reached by using the region's main roads. The grounds are open to visitors, and you should expect uneven terrain and possibly wet areas, especially after rain.
A circular structure on the eastern side is connected to a local name that hints at a story from this place's past. The fortification's lesser-known outer work deserves attention because it shows how the entire defense system was designed to protect the main stronghold.
