Oradea State Theatre, Historic theatre and opera house in Ferdinand Square, Oradea, Romania.
The Oradea State Theatre is an opera house and theatre on Ferdinand Square in Oradea, Romania, with a neoclassical and neo-Renaissance facade. Inside, the decoration follows a neo-Baroque style, and the main hall holds around 650 seats arranged across the stalls and balconies.
The building was completed in 1900 by the Vienna-based firm Fellner and Helmer, which designed theatres across Europe during that period. From the start, it was conceived as a major public building for the city of Oradea.
Three resident companies perform here in both Romanian and Hungarian, reflecting the region's long tradition of two languages living side by side. A visitor attending a performance can experience this directly, as the language on stage changes depending on which company is performing that evening.
The theatre is open throughout the year during performance days, so it helps to check the current season schedule before planning a visit. The main entrance faces Ferdinand Square, which is easy to reach on foot from the city center.
The two statues flanking the entrance represent Melpomene and Thalia, the muses of tragedy and comedy, and were made by a studio based in Budapest. What many visitors do not notice is that Fellner and Helmer designed around 50 theatre buildings across Europe, making Oradea one stop in a remarkable body of work.
