Elementary School King Petar I
Elementary School King Petar I, Protected cultural monument and primary school in Stari Grad, Serbia.
Elementary School King Petar I is a three-story building in Stari Grad featuring arched entrance windows and decorated facades designed in the academic architectural style. The structure houses separate sections for junior and senior classes with contemporary educational facilities throughout.
The school was founded in 1718 and moved to its current location in 1906, designed by Jelisaveta Načić. Načić was Serbia's first female architect, making this building an important example of her early architectural work.
The building displays Art Nouveau design elements throughout its interior spaces, with geometric patterns and ornamental details adorning the corridors and classrooms. This artistic style reflects the tastes of early 20th-century Serbian design and remains visible to visitors walking through the halls.
The building is located on Kralja Petra Street in the heart of Stari Grad and is easily accessible by foot. The central location in a densely built neighborhood means parking can be limited, especially during school hours.
The school courtyard hosted Belgrade's first basketball match in 1923, marking an early moment in Serbian sports history. This event shows how the location served the broader community beyond its role as an educational space.
