Gallery of Matica Srpska, Art museum in Novi Sad, Serbia.
The Gallery of Matica Srpska is an art museum in central Novi Sad holding more than 7,000 paintings spanning different periods of Serbian art. The historic building houses paintings, sculptures, Late Baroque works, religious art, and portraits alongside its main collection.
The institution began in Budapest in 1826 and relocated to Novi Sad in 1864, gaining significant support from Serbian merchant Sava Tekelija. This move and generous backing helped establish it as one of Serbia's major art collections.
The collection represents different periods of Serbian artistic tradition, displaying paintings, sculptures, and religious works that shaped the country's cultural identity. These artworks reflect how Serbian artists responded to historical changes and developed their own visual language over time.
The museum is located next to the Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection and offers visitors educational workshops throughout the year. Regular temporary exhibitions complement the main collection and provide fresh perspectives on its holdings.
The building was recognized as a Monument of Culture of Great Importance in 1979, marking its essential role in Serbian heritage. This official designation reflects how the structure and its contents shape understanding of the country's artistic development.
