Zelenogradsk, Baltic seaside resort in Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia
Zelenogradsk is a Baltic Sea resort in Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia, stretching along the Sambian Peninsula coastline near the Curonian Spit. The built environment shows German brick houses with gabled roofs and narrow lanes leading down to the sandy shoreline.
The settlement grew from an Old Prussian fishing village and developed into a known East Prussian spa resort called Cranz following the railway connection in 1885. After World War II, the town received its current Russian name in 1946.
The town embraces cats as part of everyday life, with feeding stations and tiny benches placed along the main streets for local felines. Visitors often spot these animals resting near shops or wandering through the promenade, where residents treat them as familiar neighbors.
The town center is within walking distance of the beach, with shops and cafes lining the main streets that are easy to explore on foot. The waterfront promenade runs parallel to the coast and provides access to several stretches of beach.
The Murarium Museum, housed in a water tower from 1905, holds a collection of cat figurines from different countries alongside real house cats. The exhibition opened in 2012 and draws visitors who come to see both the figurines and the live residents of the tower.
