Tolyatti, Industrial metropolis on Volga River in Samara Oblast, Russia

Tolyatti is a city in the eastern part of Samara Oblast, spreading across three main districts: Avtozavodsky in the north, Tsentralny in the middle, and Komsomolsky to the south. Each district has its own layout and character, with wide streets, residential blocks, and industrial zones shaping the urban landscape.

The original settlement was founded in 1737, stood for over two centuries, and had to be completely relocated in the 1950s when a new dam flooded the old site. The reconstruction created a modern industrial city that grew rapidly in the following decades through automobile production.

The local population maintains a connection to the automobile industry that shapes daily life and social identity across the three districts. Theaters and cultural centers draw audiences from neighborhoods where many families have worked at the same factory for multiple generations.

The city is well served by public buses and trolleybuses, and finding your way around is straightforward since streets follow a grid pattern in most districts. Visitors will find accommodation and restaurants mainly in Tsentralny district, where shops and administrative buildings are also located.

The entire population of the old settlement had to move, making this the first city in Russian history to change its location completely. The old site still lies under the waters of the reservoir today, while the new city was built at an entirely different spot.
