Priozersk, Historical town in Priozersky District, Russia
Priozersk is a town in Priozersky District on the Karelian Isthmus in northwestern Russia. The town stands where the Vuoksi River flows into the northwestern shore of Lake Ladoga, surrounded by forests and flat shoreline areas.
The area changed hands between Finland and Russia several times during the 20th century, first in 1940 under the Moscow Peace Treaty and again after World War II. The Korela Fortress dating from the 14th century served for centuries as a border outpost between Swedish and Russian territories.
The Korela Fortress represents the architectural legacy of multiple civilizations, serving as a testament to both Russian and Swedish influences through centuries.
The Saint Petersburg-Hiitola railway line connects the town to larger cities and allows for regular train service. Access to the center and the fortress is possible year-round on foot, though warm clothing is recommended during winter months.
A former paper mill was converted into a furniture factory, showing the shift in local industry since the end of the Soviet era. The factory buildings still stand near the waterfront and mark the industrial heritage of the town.
