Korsakov

Korsakov is a port town on the southern coast of Sakhalin Island, standing about 100 feet (30 meters) above sea level and facing the Aniva Gulf. The town centers on its harbor facilities, where fishing vessels and cargo ships arrive and depart daily.

The town was founded in 1853 as Fort Muravyovsky and experienced several periods of rule between Russia and Japan before becoming permanently Russian in 1945. This change of control shaped how the settlement developed into its current form.

The people here maintain a strong connection to fishing and the sea, rooted in the traditions of the original Ainu inhabitants. You can see this heritage reflected in how the harbor operates and how locals spend their time around maritime activities.

Buses connect the town regularly to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk for travel within the region. A ferry service links the town to Wakkanai in Japan, which operates on a schedule that suits short trips.

The town houses several fish processing plants that handle daily catches from the Sea of Okhotsk. These facilities are the economic backbone of the community and shape daily life in a very visible way.
