Krasnoarmeysk, town in Saratov Oblast, Russia
Krasnoarmeysk is a small town in the Krasnoarmeysky District of the Moscow region, situated roughly 50 km (30 mi) northeast of the capital. It is built around a former textile mill complex, with residential blocks, a central street with shops, and patches of green space throughout.
The area was known as the village of Muromzevo as far back as the 16th century, but the modern settlement took shape in 1928 when a textile mill was founded there. The town received its current name and city status in 1947, after the end of World War Two.
The town's identity is closely tied to its working-class roots, and this connection is visible in the architecture of older factory buildings still standing near the center. Small monuments and memorial plaques scattered around the streets mark the people and events that shaped daily life here.
The town has a railway station with connections to Moscow and bus routes to nearby towns, making it reachable by public transport. It is a good idea to carry cash, as card payments are not always accepted in smaller shops and local eateries.
In the early 1940s, a test ground near the town was used to trial rocket systems, including the Katyusha multiple rocket launcher, before it was deployed in combat. This chapter of local history remained largely hidden for decades and is still not widely known outside the region.
