Hermitage Museum

The Hermitage Museum encompasses five interconnected buildings along the Neva River, including the Winter Palace with its white and green baroque facade.

Catherine the Great established this museum in 1764 by acquiring an extensive collection of Western European paintings, which formed the foundation of its current collection.

The museum houses more than three million artworks and artifacts, including the largest collection of paintings in the world, spanning from ancient civilizations to modern times.

The museum opens Tuesday through Sunday from 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with wheelchair accessibility and guided tours available in multiple languages throughout the buildings.

The museum contains over 60 cats that live in the basement, maintaining a centuries-old tradition of protecting the artworks from rodents since the time of Empress Elizabeth.
