Velsk, Administrative center in Arkhangelsk Oblast, Russia
Velsk sits where the Vel River meets the Vaga River, roughly 545 kilometers south of Arkhangelsk. The town has a rectangular layout with wide streets and preserves several old merchant houses from different centuries.
The town was founded in 1137 by merchants from Novgorod and grew into an important trading center. In 1550 it received official town status as Russian territories expanded.
The local museum displays everyday objects and traditional wooden buildings that show how people lived in this northern region. You can see how river trade shaped the way the settlement developed.
The town connects to Moscow and Arkhangelsk via the M8 highway, and the railway station offers regular services to other cities. Walking through the old center is the best way to see the main sights since everything is within easy reach.
About 19 merchant houses date back several centuries and preserve the original street layout from the 1780 town plan. This old structure still gives the town its distinctive character today.
