Vyksa, Industrial city in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Russia
Vyksa is an industrial city in Vyksa Urban Okrug in the western part of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, roughly three hours by road from the regional capital. It sits on the Oka River and spreads through several districts with residential blocks, parks and production areas.
The settlement was first noted in 1501 and remained a small village on the Oka for centuries. In the 1700s the first ironworks appeared, and the place grew into an important center for metalworking.
A large festival for modern art and industrial memory turns the streets each year into an open stage for sculpture and installation. Visitors see how old factories and squares work together with new pieces.
Regular bus connections run to Nizhny Novgorod and other towns in the region, taking around three hours. The railway station sits outside the center and is served by a few regional trains.
A steel gridshell from 1897 still stands in the city and is considered one of the first of its kind worldwide. The double curved construction was then a technical experiment for factory buildings.
