Kropotkin, Regional center in Krasnodar Krai, Russia
Kropotkin sits on the right bank of the Kuban River at an elevation of 260 feet (80 meters) and forms an important transport junction in Krasnodar region. The town spreads between river and railway line with a central station and several residential neighborhoods on both sides of the main street.
The village founded in 1874 as Romanovsky Khutor developed rapidly along the railway line connecting Rostov-on-Don and Baku. After the revolution it received the name of scientist Peter Kropotkin in 1921 and later gained town status.
Vegetables and grain from the surrounding region are sold at markets and shape daily life in the town center. Residents use the squares along the main streets for spontaneous meetings and conversations after work.
Travelers can explore the town easily on foot and walk between station and riverbank in about 20 minutes. Most shops and services lie along the central axis parallel to the tracks.
The railway station Kavkazskaya carries a different name than the town itself and recalls the earlier designation of the area. Trains between Europe and Central Asia stop here regularly for passenger changes and technical checks.
