Seversk, Nuclear research facility in Tomsk Oblast, Russia.
Seversk is a closed city on the right bank of the Tom River in Tomsk Oblast, Russia, known primarily for its nuclear facilities. The streets are lined with Soviet-era apartment blocks, while scientific complexes sit behind tall fences and checkpoints.
The Soviet government founded the city in 1949 under the code name Tomsk-7 as a top-secret center for producing weapons-grade plutonium during the Cold War. The site remained invisible on all official maps until 1992 and only then received its current name.
The Ostrovsky House of Culture stages regular theater performances and concerts for local residents, while several art schools train young talent in music and visual arts. These cultural facilities create a meeting point for families and serve as a social hub for the roughly 100,000 people living in the city.
Access to the city is restricted to Russian citizens with official permission, who must show documentation at the entrance. Visitors should know that all six checkpoints around the city are strictly guarded and photography outside approved areas is forbidden.
The Siberian Chemical Combine still operates active reactors originally built for military purposes and now also used for civilian power generation. Despite the strict security measures, tens of thousands of people live here in normal apartments with schools, shops, and parks like any other Russian city.
