Novaya Gazeta is a Russian newspaper focusing on investigative reporting about government activities and social issues across the country. The editorial team now works from Riga and publishes articles under the name Novaya Gazeta Europe for an international readership.
The paper started in April 1993 with funds from Mikhail Gorbachev's Nobel Peace Prize, which he used to create an independent news source. Seven journalists from the editorial staff have been killed while working since 2000.
The newspaper maintains its critical reporting role by covering sensitive political topics and social issues that affect Russian citizens and international relations.
The publication distributes its content mainly through digital platforms, giving readers worldwide access to the articles. The editorial office is no longer located in Moscow but has moved to Latvia.
Editor-in-chief Dmitry Muratov received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021 for his work at this newspaper. He later auctioned his medal to help refugees fleeing Ukraine.
