Novocheboksarsk, Industrial city in Chuvash Republic, Russia
Novocheboksarsk is an industrial city on the southern side of the Volga River in the Chuvash Republic of Russia, stretching about three kilometers east of Cheboksary along the riverbank. Residential districts run parallel to the river and are connected by wide roads to the city center, where administrative buildings and shopping areas sit.
The city was founded in 1960 under the original name Sputnik and emerged from a Soviet program to create satellite cities near existing industrial centers. It later received its current name, which clarifies its location and function as a companion city to Cheboksary.
The name Novocheboksarsk literally means New Cheboksary and marks the spatial link to the neighboring capital of the republic. The Church of Prince Vladimir serves today as a meeting point for worshipers and stands alongside monuments from the Soviet era that remain visible across the city.
A trolleybus system with five routes and seven minibus lines connects all residential districts to the center, with most vehicles running from morning until evening. The path along the Volga waterfront works well for walking and offers open views across the river.
A journal on health culture and holistic medicine has been published here since 1995 under the patronage of an international culture organization. This publication remains one of the few in Russia focused specifically on alternative healing methods.
