Novy Urengoy, Industrial city in Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Russia.
Novy Urengoy is an industrial city in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug of Russia, located north of the Arctic Circle in the arctic tundra. The settlement spreads across several districts with modern residential blocks, administrative buildings, and gas industry facilities, surrounded by flat, treeless landscape.
The settlement emerged in 1975 after the discovery of large natural gas deposits and rapidly developed from a small workers' camp into a major city. Within a few years, thousands of people moved here to build the gas industry and organize life in the Arctic.
The city shows its multicultural character through the coexistence of workers from different parts of Russia and indigenous northern peoples. Local markets and community gatherings regularly offer opportunities to experience traditional crafts, music, and dances of the native Nenets population.
The city connects to larger transport networks through its airport and the Tyumen-Novy Urengoy railway line, serving as the northernmost major station in the region. Visitors should prepare for extreme winter conditions and wear warm clothing in multiple layers, as temperatures regularly drop far below freezing.
The city sits entirely on permafrost, which means all buildings must be erected on special stilts to prevent the ground from melting. During the polar night in winter, the sun remains below the horizon for several weeks, while in summer it does not set for weeks at a time.
