Ozyorsk, Closed nuclear town in Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia
Ozyorsk is a closed town in Ozyorsk Urban Okrug, Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia, surrounded by forests and lakes in the southern Urals. The settlement sits roughly 240 meters (790 feet) above sea level near Lake Irtyash and consists of residential neighborhoods grouped around industrial complexes.
The settlement emerged in 1945 under the cover name Chelyabinsk-40 as a secret center for producing plutonium for Soviet atomic weapons. After further renaming, the place received its current name in 1994 and remained a closed town.
The name comes from a Russian word for lake and reflects the location near water, while daily life revolves around the nuclear sector. Residents live in a settlement that remains largely invisible to outsiders and where routines follow special security protocols.
Access requires a special permit issued only after review by Russian authorities, and security checks take place at guarded checkpoints. Foreign visitors should expect additional restrictions, as the entire zone holds military status.
The town did not appear on maps for many years and remained invisible even to Soviet citizens, as any mention was strictly forbidden. Today residents with authorization can receive relatives, but the entire area remains under tight government control.
