Palace Bridge, Steel bascule bridge on Neva River, Saint Petersburg, Russia.
The Palace Bridge extends 261 meters across the Neva River with two sections that lift to a 45-degree angle for maritime traffic.
Construction of the bridge started in 1912 under architect Andrzej Pszenicki and officially opened on December 23, 1916 to connect central Saint Petersburg.
The bridge forms a central element in Saint Petersburg's nighttime infrastructure, connecting the Winter Palace area to Vasilievsky Island.
During navigation season, the bridge opens at night according to a fixed schedule, requiring travelers to plan their crossings between 1:10 AM and 5:00 AM.
The mechanical system raises two 59-meter spans weighing 700 tons each, allowing large vessels to pass between the Baltic Sea and inland waterways.
