Kirzhach, Administrative center in Vladimir Oblast, Russia
Kirzhach is a settlement on the Kirzhach River in Vladimir Oblast, Russia. Buildings spread across both riverbanks and are linked by a timber bridge near former printing facilities.
The Annunciation Monastery was founded in the 14th century by Sergius of Radonezh and formed the core of the settlement. In 1778 the place received town rights and developed as a trading center in the region.
The wooden footbridge crossing the river serves as a daily link for residents moving between both halves of the settlement. Orthodox church buildings continue to function as gathering places and shape the skyline with their onion domes and whitewashed walls.
Winter months bring temperatures below freezing and allow for walks on frozen surfaces, while summer months offer warmer days for activities along the riverbank. The timber bridge suits pedestrians and remains passable throughout the year.
A monument outside the center marks the spot where Yuri Gagarin and his flight instructor crashed during a training flight in March 1968. The memorial draws visitors who wish to pay respects to the first human in space.
