Toropets

Toropets sits where the Toropa River meets Lake Solomennoye, creating a natural settlement at 180 meters above sea level. The town contains around 66 federal monuments and 30 local heritage sites that shape its historical character.

The town's documented history begins in 1074 as part of the Principality of Smolensk, later becoming an independent principality by 1167. This early foundation established it as a lasting settlement in the region.

The town displays brick churches from the 17th and 18th centuries throughout its streets, showing how religious architecture shaped the community over time. These buildings remain central to how locals and visitors experience the place today.

The M9 highway from Moscow to Riga passes through the southern district, making the town readily accessible by car. A railway line connects it to Bologoye and Velikiye Luki for those traveling by train.

The Museum of the History of Photography holds collections documenting the evolution of photographic techniques and how visual culture developed in the region. This specialized collection reflects how photography shaped the community's view of itself.
