Broken Circle, War memorial in Kokkorewo, Russia
Broken Circle is a war memorial near Kokkorevo village on Lake Ladoga's shore, featuring two concrete half-arches rising about 7 meters high. The structure displays tire tracks imprinted beneath and includes an eternal flame, white spheres, and an authentic 85mm anti-aircraft gun.
The memorial marks the starting point of the Road of Life, a critical supply route during the Leningrad blockade from 1941 to 1944. This route was vital for transporting food and evacuating residents from the besieged city.
The memorial's name "Broken Circle" reflects the destruction and hardship of the blockade years. Visitors encounter several symbolic elements on site: an eternal flame, white spheres, and an authentic anti-aircraft gun that together tell the story of wartime sacrifice.
The memorial is most easily reached by train from Finland Station to Vaganovo Station, followed by a walk to the site. The location is accessible year-round, but visiting during warmer months makes the walk more comfortable since the paths can be muddy in other seasons.
The site serves as the start and finish point for an annual international marathon commemorating the Road of Life route. This event brings together participants from different countries who retrace the historic path by running.
