Akademia Nauk rises to 1180 meters in elevation and forms part of the volcanic system alongside Karymsky Lake in the Eastern Range.

The volcano experienced its most recent eruption from January to April 1996, releasing 30 to 40 million tons of pyroclastic material into the atmosphere.

Scientists from the Russian Academy of Sciences conduct regular research at this location to monitor volcanic activity and geological changes in the region.

Access to the volcano requires specialized transportation arrangements and careful planning due to its position in the remote Kamchatka Peninsula territory.

The 1996 eruption generated tsunamis reaching 20 meters in height and transformed Karymsky Lake from neutral to acidic with a pH change from 7.5 to 3.2.
