Uzon, Volcanic caldera in Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia.

The Uzon caldera extends 9 by 12 kilometers across the eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, featuring numerous thermal springs and mud pots throughout its territory.

During the mid-Pleistocene period, multiple large eruptions formed the Uzon caldera, depositing 25 cubic kilometers of ignimbrite across the surrounding region.

Scientists from around the world study the extremophile micro-organisms that inhabit the high-temperature environments within the Uzon caldera.

The Uzon caldera stands at 1,617 meters above sea level and requires special permits through the Kronotsky Nature Reserve for access.

Lake Dalny fills a Holocene maar in the northeast section of the caldera, contributing to the diverse geological features of the area.
