Bureya Dam, Hydroelectric dam in Amur Oblast, Russia.
Bureya Dam is a concrete structure that spans roughly 730 meters and rises over 140 meters high. The reservoir behind it covers a large area and is used by six turbines to generate electricity.
Construction began in 1976 but was interrupted several times until work resumed in 1999. The completed structure began operating in 2009.
The dam shows Soviet and Russian engineering skill in a remote region. Today it shapes the landscape and supplies power to local industry and communities.
The site sits away from main roads and requires a longer drive through the region, so planning ahead is wise. The best time to visit is during warmer months when access roads are easier to reach.
The project suffered multiple construction delays over decades and was interrupted so long that it nearly faded from attention. Its eventual completion showed the ability to finish even long-abandoned infrastructure projects in this remote region.
