Chaplygin, Administrative center in Lipetsk Oblast, Russia
Chaplygin is a town in Lipetsk Oblast located where the Stanovaya Ryasa and Yagodnaya Ryasa Rivers meet. It sits at an elevation of about 140 meters and has a local food processing industry that forms the economic base of the community.
The settlement was founded in 1638 as Ust Stanovykh Ryas and received a fortress called Oranienburg in 1702 under Peter the Great's orders. Alexander Menshikov took control of the fortress in 1712 and established a monastery in the area.
The town's name honors Sergey Chaplygin, a Russian physicist born here in 1869 who later made important contributions to aerodynamics and mechanics.
The town center offers easy access to local shops and services in a flat landscape. Visitors will find the basic amenities and connections needed for a straightforward stay in the area.
The location was originally known for its Oranienburg fortress, which was controlled by one of the Russian Empire's most influential generals. This early connection to Menshikov made it an important administrative center in the region.
