Chebarkul, Fortress town in Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia
Chebarkul sits along the lake of the same name in the southern Ural region at an elevation of around 330 meters (1,082 feet). The town spreads along the water's edge, surrounded by the hills and forests of this mountainous landscape.
The settlement was established in 1736 as a defensive outpost between Russian and Bashkir territories. It did not receive official town status until 1951.
The town's identity is closely tied to its military presence, which shapes daily life and community values in the region. This connection to armed forces has influenced how residents view their place and its role in the country.
The town is well connected to Chelyabinsk, about 78 kilometers (48 miles) to the west, with regular train and bus services. Visitors should prepare for a cold climate, especially in winter months when the lake freezes over.
In February 2013, a meteor broke through the lake's ice, leaving a hole about six meters wide in the frozen surface. This event brought worldwide attention to the place and drew scientists and astronomers to investigate the impact.
