The Volga Delta splits into more than 800 branches and streams, creating an extensive network of waterways covering 27,224 square kilometers near the Caspian Sea.
The delta expanded substantially during the 20th century, growing from 3,222 square kilometers in 1880 to its current size due to changes in Caspian Sea levels.
Traditional fishing communities in the delta maintain centuries-old methods of harvesting sturgeon, while adapting to modern conservation requirements for this protected species.
Visitors can reach the delta through Astrakhan city, which offers boat tours, fishing expeditions, and guided nature walks between July and September.
The waters contain over 200 species of fish, while the wetlands support 280 bird species, including endangered Dalmatian pelicans and white-tailed eagles.
