Peter the Great Statue, Naval monument near Moskva River, Russia
The Peter the Great Statue is a 98-meter-tall monument on an artificial island in the Moskva River, central Moscow. Built from stainless steel, bronze, and copper, it ranks among the tallest freestanding sculptures on the planet.
The sculpture was completed in 1997 by Zurab Tsereteli as a tribute to Peter the Great. The design originally depicted a different historical figure before being repurposed.
The statue represents Peter the Great holding a gilded scroll, positioned above bronze ships with cannons that create water effects at the base.
The figure stands on a reinforced concrete base with internal maintenance stairs running through the structure. You can view it clearly from the riverbanks without needing to access the island itself.
The sails in the composition incorporate special lightweight materials originally developed for aerospace applications. This technology significantly reduces the weight of the upper metal sections.
