Lake Chany, Protected lake in Novosibirsk Oblast, Russia
Lake Chany spans across five districts with a surface area of 1,700 square kilometers and contains approximately seventy islands within its waters.
The construction of dams on inflowing rivers during the second half of the twentieth century resulted in decreased water levels throughout Lake Chany.
The wetlands near Lake Chany support traditional activities including agriculture, livestock grazing, hay harvesting, and both commercial and recreational fishing.
The lake maintains an average depth between one and two meters, reaching eight meters at its deepest sections, with strong winds generating high waves.
Lake Chany functions as a critical habitat for over 20,000 breeding and migrating waterbirds, supporting multiple species within its diverse wetland ecosystem.
