Zhelezinskaya Fortress

Zhelezinskaya Fortress is a military stronghold in Zjelezinka built with stone walls positioned along the Irtysh River, with multiple entry gates scattered throughout the site. The ruins still show the layout of defensive points that once formed a coordinated system.

The fortress was founded in 1717 to protect trade routes and secure control over river transportation in the region. It served as a key military post supporting expansion efforts during that period.

The fortress reflects how military needs shaped building choices that fit the local setting and available materials. Visitors can still see how soldiers and residents organized daily life within these structures.

The ruins are reachable by regional bus from Pavlodar, with the journey taking roughly 3 hours to reach Zjelezinka. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since the terrain is uneven and paths are not clearly marked.

Excavations have uncovered objects from the 18th century, ranging from weapons to everyday items that show how soldiers lived on site. These discoveries help explain the daily routines and conditions soldiers endured in this remote fortress.
