Annunciation Cathedral, Pavlodar, Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan.
The Annunciation Cathedral is a red brick Orthodox church on the Irtysh River embankment in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan. It has a large central dome topped with a gilded cross, along with several smaller domes arranged around the roof.
The cathedral was built in 1993, shortly after Kazakhstan gained independence and religious practice was allowed again. It was one of the first large Orthodox churches to be built in the region after decades during which Soviet rule had suppressed religious life.
The cathedral is the center of Orthodox life in Pavlodar, drawing worshippers on Sundays and major feast days throughout the year. On holidays like Easter, crowds gather both inside and along the riverbank outside the building.
The cathedral is on the Irtysh River embankment and easy to reach on foot from the city center. As it is an active place of worship, visitors are expected to dress modestly, and it is worth timing your visit outside of service hours if you want to look around freely.
The cathedral's bells were cast in Moscow and transported specifically for this site. On calm days, their sound carries far across the Irtysh River and can be heard from the opposite bank.
