Shkotovsky District, Municipal district in Primorsky Krai, Russia
Shkotovsky District is a municipal district in Primorsky Krai, Russia. It covers an area of 2,664.5 square kilometers (about 1,029 square miles) and had a population of around 21,000 in 2025, with its administrative center in the urban settlement of Smolyaninovo.
The district was established on January 4, 1926, with its center in the village of Shkotovo. In 1964, the administrative center was moved to Smolyaninovo, and from 1964 to 2004 it was in Bolshoy Kamen, but since 2004 the administration has been located outside the district in Bolshoy Kamen.
The district is named after the navigator Nikolai Shkot, who arrived in the Far East in 1856. In the village of Staklyanukha and the Novorossiysk valley, you can still see earthworks from the Bohai kingdom, which existed here in the 7th century.
The district is best explored by car, as public transport between villages is limited. The regional road 05A-608 connects Nakhodka and Artyom, while the federal A370 leads to Vladivostok and Khabarovsk, making it easy to reach the main settlements.
The district is one of the oldest gold mining areas in Primorsky Krai, with gold extracted as early as the Bohai state. The Ussuri Nature Reserve covers 59.1% of its territory within the district and is home to Siberian tigers.
