Sochi International Airport, International airport in Adler District, Sochi, Russia.
Sochi International Airport is an international airport serving the Adler District within Krasnodar Krai on Russia's Black Sea coast. The site features two parallel runways and a terminal building with separate processing areas for domestic and foreign flights.
The initial runway and support structures appeared in the early 1940s as a military base for monitoring the Black Sea coastline. Civilian passenger operations began in the postwar period, and flights outside the Soviet Union started from 1981 onward.
The facility carries the name Adler, which comes from a 19th-century designation for the surrounding district near the mouth of the Mzymta River. Today it functions as the main gateway for travelers heading to coastal resorts and mountain destinations along the Black Sea shore.
Travel from the city center takes around 40 minutes by public transport or taxi, and the terminal sits near the coastal road leading north. Guests should allow extra time for processing lines during high season between May and September.
The renovations for the 2014 Winter Olympics doubled capacity within five years and made the terminal one of the most modern in Eastern Europe. A separate area within the terminal building was created for cargo operations handling flower shipments from South America and fresh fish from Black Sea countries.
