Transfiguration Cathedral, Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Tambov, Russia.
Transfiguration Cathedral is a brick Orthodox church on Sobornaya Square in the center of Tambov, Russia, built in the neoclassical style. The church is topped by five domes and includes a tall bell tower that defines the skyline of the surrounding area.
Construction of the cathedral started in 1694 under the direction of the local bishop and took several decades to finish. The bell tower was demolished in the early 20th century and only rebuilt long after, using historical records as a guide.
The Transfiguration Cathedral is an active parish where Orthodox Christians gather for services throughout the week. Inside, visitors can see icon screens and sacred objects that play a central role in Orthodox worship.
The cathedral sits on Sobornaya Square in the city center and is easy to reach on foot from most parts of downtown. Visitors should cover their shoulders and knees and keep voices low, especially when a service is taking place inside.
The bell tower was missing for over eighty years before it was rebuilt, and most visitors would not guess it is a modern reconstruction when looking at it today. The plans used for the rebuilding came from archive materials that survived the Soviet period.
