Yaroslav's Court, Medieval palace complex in Veliky Novgorod, Russia
Yaroslav's Court is a medieval building complex on the east bank of the Volkhov River in central Veliky Novgorod, made up of several stone churches, the remains of a historic marketplace, and an old courthouse. The structures span many centuries and stand across an open area, each clearly separate from the others.
The site was established in the early 11th century by Prince Yaroslav the Wise as the political and religious center of Novgorod. It later grew into the city's main trading ground until Novgorod lost its independence in the late 15th century.
The Saint Nicholas Cathedral on the site was built before the cathedral across the river and served as the church of visiting merchants rather than the local clergy. Traders from across northern Europe would stop here before entering the market, making this a meeting point between different peoples and faiths.
The complex sits on the riverbank in the city center and is easy to reach on foot from most of the old town. The grounds are open to walk around freely, though visiting the interiors of the churches may require separate entry.
The marketplace on the site was divided into rows, each dedicated to a specific trade or type of goods, from furs to metalwork. This layout was uncommon in medieval Europe and made Novgorod one of the most organized trading centers of its time.
