Tuzla Island, Sandy island in Kerch Strait, Ukraine.
Tuzla Island is an island in the Kerch Strait lying between the Kerch Peninsula and the Taman Peninsula. It contains power generators, border facilities, fishing settlements, and several piers that serve as the working infrastructure of the place.
The island formed in 1925 when a severe storm separated it from the Taman Peninsula. It became part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1954 and has since played a role in regional relations.
The island was long a quiet place where fishers worked and border guards maintained their posts. Today, competing interests shape how people use and experience this remote location.
Access to the island is difficult and requires permission since it lies in a sensitive border zone. Those interested in visiting should research requirements in advance and arrange proper documentation.
An unfinished pier was built in 2003 that extends only about 1,200 meters before ending abruptly. This peculiar structure stands as a physical reminder of competing interests and unresolved plans that have shaped the place.
