Kerch, Port city in eastern Crimean Peninsula, Ukraine

This city sits on the western shore of the Kerch Strait in Crimea, linking the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov through natural harbors and inlets. Built-up areas stretch along the coast with residential and industrial neighborhoods, old quarters on the hillsides, and a busy port that serves as a passage for ships and passengers.

Greek settlers founded Panticapaeum in the 7th century BC, which grew into the capital of the Bosporan Kingdom and a trading hub in the Mediterranean. Later the city was controlled by Scythian, Roman, Byzantine, Slavic and Ottoman rulers before becoming part of the Russian Empire in the 18th century.

Families and fishermen gather at the harbor in the morning, where local markets offer fresh catches and regional goods. Orthodox holidays are observed in the old town's small churches, while young people meet at public squares and watch the strait go by.

Visitors can walk through the center, where shops, markets and cafes concentrate in the older streets, while the waterfront promenade invites strolling and watching ships pass through. The hillsides offer views of the strait and open water, but require some stamina to climb.

Near the harbor stands an ancient burial mound from the 4th century BC, whose stepped dome ceiling is built from limestone blocks fitted without mortar and remains intact today. Below the city run miles of underground stone quarries, once used to extract building material and now partly accessible to visitors.
