Odoev

Odoev is a work settlement in Tula Oblast situated on the left bank of the Upa River. The town functions as the administrative center of the Odoyevsky District and serves the local rural population.

Founded in 1380, this settlement was the capital of the Odoevsky Duchy until it passed to Lithuanian control in 1407. This shift reflected the complex power struggles of the medieval period between different regional powers.

Local clay toy makers from surrounding villages still practice ancient techniques, and you can find their handmade figurines in the museum dedicated to this craft. These toys have been made the same way for generations and represent a living tradition that visitors can learn about.

The settlement is small and easily walkable, with straightforward access to local museums and historical landmarks. Visiting during warmer months makes exploring more comfortable, as the climate is milder.

Castle Hill preserves the remains of a medieval fortress that once defended the town during regional conflicts. Walking up this hill, visitors can see the terraced earthworks that formed the defensive structure.
