Irkutsk Reservoir

Irkutsk Reservoir is a large artificial lake in Siberia that spans across the landscape for many kilometers. It provides hydroelectric power and water supply to the region while offering wide, open water views bordered by forested shores.

The reservoir was created in the 1950s when a dam was built across the Angara River. This project became central to the Soviet industrial expansion and fundamentally reshaped the region's geography and ecology.

The best way to reach the reservoir is from Irkutsk by car or public transport to various viewpoints along its shore. The best time to visit is from late spring through early fall, when weather is mild and the water remains ice-free.

In winter months, the entire reservoir freezes solid, turning into a flat ice surface where locals practice ice fishing and other cold-weather activities. This extreme seasonal transformation makes it a completely different place depending on the time of year.
