Stroganov Church, Orthodox church in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia
Stroganov Church is an Orthodox place of worship in Nizhny Novgorod topped by five domes featuring colored tile patterns, accented by elaborate white stone carvings. The bell tower beside the main structure frames the building and rises prominently above the surrounding street.
Wealthy merchant Grigory Stroganov funded construction of this building from 1696 to 1719, with work interrupted by fires and other setbacks. Its completion demonstrated the growing economic power of the merchant family in this Volga River city.
The church bears the name of its patrons, the wealthy merchant Stroganov family, whose taste shaped the ornate decorations throughout. The red brick walls with white stone details reflect their influence in bringing refined artistic ideas to this river city.
The church sits on Rozhdestvenskaya Street near the Oka River, close to the River Station where several bus routes stop. Visitors can reach it easily by public transport at any time of year.
The bell tower once held a remarkable clock mechanism in the 18th century that displayed lunar phases and seasonal cycles. This mechanical achievement was later maintained by the young inventor Ivan Kulibin.
