Orthodox cathedral of the Dormition of Our Lady in Makhachkala, Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Makhachkala, Russia.
The Orthodox cathedral of the Dormition of Our Lady is a stone church built in Russian Revival style in the center of Makhachkala. It has the typical onion domes, decorated facades, and an ornate iconostasis made in Moscow.
The cathedral was built starting in 1905 with funds provided by Emperor Nicholas II and completed in February 1906. It remains one of the very few Russian Orthodox buildings erected in Dagestan during that era.
The cathedral stands as the main Orthodox place of worship in a city where most residents are Muslim, which gives it a particular role in the local religious landscape. Inside, visitors can see icons, candles, and devotional objects that reflect the daily life of a small but active community.
The cathedral is in the city center and easy to reach on foot from most central points. Modest dress is expected inside, and access may be limited during active services.
Since 2014, the cathedral has kept authenticated copies of the Gifts of the Magi, brought from the Agiou Pavlou Monastery on Mount Athos. These relics draw pilgrims who would not otherwise travel to this part of Russia.
