Konevets, Religious island in Lake Ladoga, Russia
Konevets is an island in Lake Ladoga featuring sandy shores and two notable cliffs, Svyataya and Zmeinaya, rising 34 and 29 meters above the water. The 8.5 square kilometer terrain includes these rock formations that shape the island's character and natural landscape.
The Orthodox Monastery of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was founded in 1393 by Arseny of Novgorod and has defined the island for about 600 years. It survived Swedish raids in 1577 and 1610 that threatened its existence as a religious site.
The Kon-kamen rock on the island marks a place where Karelian people once held spiritual ceremonies before Orthodox faith arrived in the region. Today this location reflects layers of local belief and draws visitors interested in pre-Christian traditions.
The island is reached by ferry from Vladimirovka village, with the crossing taking about 45 minutes across the lake. Visitors should prepare for changeable weather on open water and bring appropriate clothing for the journey.
During winter months, Lake Ladoga freezes solid enough that visitors can walk directly across the ice to reach the island instead of taking the ferry. This seasonal shift transforms how people access the place entirely.
