Khopyor Nature Reserve

Khopyor Nature Reserve spreads along the Khopyor River in Voronezh Oblast, featuring floodplain forests with oak and alder trees alongside many lakes scattered throughout the landscape. The reserve offers observation points and walking routes that allow visitors to explore these different habitats.

The Soviet government established this protected area in 1935 to safeguard populations of the Russian desman, a rare animal species found in this river landscape. The reserve's protected status was designed to support the species' expansion into neighboring regions.

The reserve functions as a research and learning center where scientists study the river ecosystem and work to protect endangered species. Visitors can observe the dedication to preserving this landscape through the active presence of research stations and educational initiatives.

Visitors must register in advance at the administration office before exploring the marked trails and observation points throughout the area. Spring and autumn offer the best conditions for visiting, when the weather is mild and wildlife observation is particularly rewarding.

The area is home to the rare Russian desman, an aquatic mammal found almost exclusively in these river floodplains and almost nowhere else in the world. This specialized species makes the reserve a crucial refuge for one of Russia's most threatened animals.
