Pskovo-Pechersky Dormition Monastery, Orthodox monastery in Pechory, Russia
Pskovo-Pechersky Dormition Monastery is an Eastern Orthodox complex in Pechory, Russia, built around a series of natural sandstone caves. The ensemble includes the Dormition Church, Mikhailovsky Cathedral, and smaller chapels arranged within fortress walls and wooded slopes.
The complex was founded in the early 15th century when monks began using the natural caves for prayer and burial. During the 16th century, the site became a fortified stronghold during the Livonian War and continued operating without interruption through the Soviet era.
The name of the monastery comes from the natural caves carved into the sandstone, which monks used as chapels and living quarters. Today, pilgrims walk quietly through the grounds, lighting candles and pausing before the icons displayed in the churches.
The caves and Sretensky Church are open to visitors during daylight hours, while the Dormition Church can be entered only during services. Modest clothing is required, and visitors should move quietly when ceremonies are underway.
The underground galleries carved into the hillside hold burial chambers where monks have been laid to rest since the 15th century. Some of the graves remain visible through small openings cut directly into the rock face.
