Senty Church

Senty Church is a stone structure standing on a mountain ridge along the left bank of the Teberda River, about 18 kilometers south of Karachayevsk. The complex includes the main building, a stone mausoleum, and remains of the former Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery structures.

The construction of this building dates to 901 AD, confirmed by an inscription found on the northern wall of the eastern wing. This early foundation makes it a significant witness to architectural and religious development in the Caucasus region during the early Middle Ages.

The interior walls display a significant collection of preserved frescoes from the Alanian period, including depictions of the Virgin Mary and Saint Nicholas. These paintings reveal the religious beliefs and artistic skills of that distant era.

This site is located in mountainous terrain and requires different preparation depending on the season. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and pay attention to weather conditions in the Caucasus region, as these can change quickly.

The masonry technique at the gables differs noticeably from standard construction methods, featuring curved rows instead of horizontal ones at the roof edges. This structural detail shows the specialized knowledge of local craftspeople and their adaptation to the mountain setting.
