Insterburg Castle

Insterburg Castle is a brick fortress in Chernyakhovsk located on elevated terrain where the Angrapa and Inster rivers meet. The northern wing of the structure remains partially intact, preserving details of its original construction.

The Teutonic Knights built this military fortress in 1337 as a defensive stronghold along their eastern frontier, completing its main structure by 1347. The castle reflects the military strategies of that monastic military order during their regional expansion.

The museum inside displays artifacts and information about the region's medieval past in Russian and German, allowing visitors to understand how people lived in that era. Local communities still connect with this space as an important landmark tied to their shared history.

The castle ruins sit about one kilometer north of Chernyakhovsk's train station, making them easy to reach from the town center. Guided tours are available at the entrance to help visitors understand the site's history and layout.

The castle grounds host an artist studio where a local creator runs exhibitions and cultural gatherings throughout the year. This active artistic presence brings contemporary life to the historic site in an unexpected way.
