Zapadnaya Litsa, naval base in Russia
Zapadnaya Litsa is a naval base located on the Barents Sea in Russia's Arctic region. The installation serves as a homeport for surface ships and submarines of the Northern Fleet and is one of the largest naval facilities in the Russian Far North.
The base was developed in the mid-20th century as a Soviet naval outpost. It became strategically crucial during the Cold War as a deployment hub for submarines and has maintained this role to the present day.
The base is located in a remote area along the Barents Sea and is not open to civilian visitors. The nearest settlement is several hundred kilometers away, making access challenging and travel to the region difficult.
The base is known for hosting one of the world's largest concentrations of nuclear submarines. These vessels form a core part of Russia's deterrence strategy and make it one of the most secretive military complexes in the country.
