Abalaksky Monastery

Abalaksky Monastery is an Orthodox complex situated on a high riverbank overlooking the Irtysh in Siberia. The site features multiple stone churches and a prominent bell tower that form the core of the religious complex.

The monastery was established in 1783 by imperial decree and replaced a wooden church that had stood on the site since 1636. The construction reflected Russia's push to strengthen Orthodox presence across Siberia during this period of colonial expansion.

The monastery houses a revered icon copy that draws pilgrims seeking spiritual connection and prayer. Visitors can observe how the space remains a living place of worship where locals and travelers come to light candles and reflect.

The complex sits roughly 28 kilometers southeast of Tobolsk and includes several restored buildings spread across the grounds. Comfortable footwear is recommended since the terrain is uneven and multiple structures require walking between them.

Adjacent to the monastery stands a reconstructed wooden fortress that replicates the design of a Siberian Cossack outpost from an earlier era. This addition transforms the grounds into a hybrid site where religious and military history intersect visibly.
